Was My Action Appropriate? Seated Beside a Teen at a Church Workshop/Lunch…?

We were at a workshop in which we learned how to tarp roofs, remove rotted sheetrock, etc., so we’d be prepared to help out in hurricane prone areas next year. We were to have a catered lunch at noon, then a couple more hours of instruction and hands on. A teen girl sat beside me at the table in the classroom, and she complained about something every few minutes – “I’m hungry. I’m cold. I’m thirsty. I’m hot….” I wanted to tell her to stuff it, but I pointedly ignored her instead when she did that and talked to other adults around me. Did I do her a disservice by not just coming out and telling her to knock off the whining?

yeah teenagers can be pretty self obsessed but its usually just a phase……anyone older I would have said something…or if you really want to say something next time it happens, be nice about it – say something like “yeah I think we’re all in the same boat as you too but lets just try and be positive because we’re all here to make a bad situation better and not more of a downer”….or something like that, just be polite about it because stirring up bad emotions has a way of creating a domino effect with everyone else. Plus you don’t want to totally embarrass the girl and put her off from any future volunteer work, she may just be trying to get someone to talk with her and doesn’t know what else to say because that’s how she relates with ppl her own age. Simply change the conversation topic to something else “what sports do you play?”, “favorite subject”, “seen any good movies?”, etc and it won’t be an issue….Or if its much too difficult to talk to a teenager than just continue to ignore her.
