The BlackBerry Curve would be the best BlackBerry ever if it had 3G. Fact. If you can accept that then stop reading now because it’s the bottom line. The Curve is smaller, sexier and far more fun to use than the Almighty flagship Bold. Its screen is just as crisp, its menu ever so slightly tweaked, and it weighs in just under very light and just over cheap. It’s a dark horse and BlackBerry knew it, so they crippled it and marked it as an outcast by making its Trackball black.

If you still need proof, look no further than the upcoming Gemini 9300. It looks virtually identical to the Curve 8900 but sits in the 9000 series, which means that the RIM gods have permitted it the power of 3G. This is a bitter pill for the poor Curve 8310 owners who forked out close to Bold prices up until recently and who will no doubt think twice before considering the crippled 8900. Still things could be worse, they could be Storm owners.

Idiot ranting aside, the Curve 8900 is a magnificent phone. If you can stomach EDGE, live for e-mail, and want a phone that has more battery than Reik on crack, then the 8900 is a perfect fit.

Outside of data speeds, it is very difficult to elaborate on what sets the 8900 apart from its big brother the Bold. Where the Bold has a bigger screen and a faster CPU, the 8900 is smaller and optimized. It’s the battle between stately and petit and where the bold was a Rhino in a tuxedo, the 8900 is a ballerina with Uzi’s.

It is however very easy to discern the 8900 from the previous Curve. On the surface the phones do look akin, albeit in the same way a Ferrari and a Beetle both have four wheels and a hooter. It’s only when you start to use the 8900 that the older curve starts to really show its age. The squeaky button clicks, the rattling Trackball and the upchuck OS of the 8310 will most definitely drive you to upgrade to the 8900. And you won’t be disappointed.

While the Gemini looks to be the Holy Grail for every man, the Curve 8900 does a superb job of being the baby BB. While its features dwarf most high end phones, the lack of 3G tears it down to entry level. Much like a Ladyboy, it’s one small thing that makes all the difference. Pricing is not available on the Curve 8900 yet, but if it’s anywhere near Bold or Storm pricing feel free to lop 25% off the score.
