The original idea for this article was to provide a guide for visitors looking for river outfitters/ campgrounds along the banks of the Guadalupe River between Canyon Lake and New Braunfels, Texas. However, a drive down scenic River Road past outfitter after outfitter proved that this would be a more daunting task that I had originally thought. How was I supposed to choose among the many outfitters? Clearly, an article including all of them would take (at least seemingly) the rest of my days. Then, as if in answer to my thoughts, the Lazy L&L came into view. This was it–the scenery alone surpassed all the others. My search had ended.
The first thing I noticed about the Lazy L&L was the meticulously kept grounds and the large number of campsites. They accurately boast thirty-seven river front campsites with water and electricity, BBQ grills, picnic tables, and fire rings (for those cool fall hill country nights). If you are feeling a little more adventurous, they also offer twelve or more primitive camping sites, and for those who enjoy large family or group outings, Lazy L&L offers two private camping areas with access to main camp and three pavilions. All of which can be rented for a reasonable fee. While the owners encourage calling in advance for reservations (especially in the busy summer months), the campground also provides one of the largest overflow areas to be found on the river.
The next aspect that stood out was the number of amenities and services provided at the Lazy L&L. I couldn’t help but notice the large “general store” with all the necessities that someone could leave at home–including toiletries, BBQ and fishing supplies, food, and drinks. This may not seem like such a big deal, but when the nearest Wal-Mart is thirty minutes away, well…you get the idea. Should you decide, though, that you have to satisfy your Wal-Mart urge, Lazy L&L also offers Wi-Fi connections, so you can pull up your map of choice. There is also a delicious little grill operated on the site, during the summer months, and catering is available with advanced notice. Last, but definitely not least (and definitely most important)–the bathrooms. If you are one of the many that don’t mind camping as long as certain needs (and comforts) are provided for, then you will certainly share my glee and finding three large, strategically placed bathrooms at the Lazy L&L that are…drum roll please…clean! I’ve seen (and unfortunately used) my share of undesirable facilities, but no worries here. They also offer hot showers for a small fee.
Now, you’re probably wondering, “Great, they have plenty of room for me, great scenery by the river, lots of amenities, but I’m not coming to the river to sit around. What do I get to do?” Never fear–there are plenty of activities to keep you occupied whether you are a river rat or a land lubber. You can’t come to this area without “tubing” or “toobing” the river (yes, there is argument in these parts as to the spelling). While the campground has lots of river access, it also has prime access to the Devil’s Playground whitewater run–one of the most exciting set of rapids along the Guadalupe. You can rent a tube (or raft) or bring your own (there is an air station available), and the Lazy L&L will provide a shuttle service to pick you up at one of the river crossings and return you to the campground for round two. If you prefer your fun sans water, the campground also provides volleyball, horseshoes, and fishing to keep you entertained.
Okay, let’s recap. How are the guys at Lazy L&L different from the other outfitters along the river? First, they are definitely family oriented with activities for all. Second, you can bring your own tube or raft (believe it or not, this can be a problem elsewhere). They provide lots of clean, yes clean, bathrooms, and lots of amenities at each regular campsite. Then if you still need a reason to visit, the scenery along the river is incredible. So, pack up the family and all of the corresponding stuff, and head out. What are you waiting for?
If you have any questions or need directions, visit Lazy L&L’s web site or give them a call at (830) 964-3455.
